The Venue
The Richardson Hotel Buffalo is a National Historic Landmark set on more than 40 acres of historic green space and park campus designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted.
Officially known as The Richardson Olmsted Complex, the historic architectural gem has a fascinating history. Designed by renowned American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the complex was built in the late 19th century to serve as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, a pioneering psychiatric institution. The complex is a masterpiece of Romanesque Revival architecture, featuring intricate stonework, grand towers, and a picturesque, park-like setting designed by Olmsted.
Over the years, the complex evolved, housing and treating individuals with mental illnesses for more than a century. However, as mental healthcare practices changed, the buildings fell into disuse and disrepair. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and repurpose the Richardson Olmsted Complex. The site has been restored and is now known as the Richardson Olmsted Campus, serving as a cultural, educational, and architectural landmark.
Today, the complex includes a hotel, conference center, and an architecture center that explores its history, the work of Richardson and Olmsted, and the evolution of mental healthcare in the United States. It has become a symbol of historic preservation and adaptive reuse, showcasing the significance of architectural heritage in Buffalo and beyond. Visitors will explore the beautiful grounds and learn about the complex's rich past and promising future as a center for cultural and community engagement.
